Staff ‘blow-out’ in office of PM & Cabinet
STAFF numbers in the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet have swelled more than 40 per cent under Labor.
This has come as prime ministerial control over key policy areas has increased.
The total number of people employed by the department jumped from 464 in 2007-08 to 657 in 2009-10. This continues a steady rise during the final years of the Howard government. Staff numbers increased from 370 in 2004-05 to 422 plus a 106-person Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation forum taskforce in 2005-06, to 443 plus a 212-person APEC taskforce in 2006-07.
Opposition finance spokesman Andrew Robb said the “blow-out” in Julia Gillard’s own department made a mockery of Labor’s promise.
