Kung Fu training for AusAid workers a hit to taxpayers | News.com.au

Taxpayers are coughing up more than $110,000 for foreign aid workers to learn martial arts.

At the same time Labor can’t reduce its wasteful spending, they are refusing to look at ways the Department of Foreign Affairs can make savings like this because many Labor MP’s are afraid of upsetting potential leadership contender Kevin Rudd.

Canberra-based Yu Shih Tao Kung Fu has just signed a $31,800 contract with AusAID to deliver “personal safety and awareness training” for government workers heading to overseas trouble spots, the Courier-Mail reported.

It has previously signed at least three other contracts with the aid agency valued at a further $80,000.

AusAID last night defended the contract with the kung fu academy, saying its staff often worked in “difficult and high threat” locations.
