Set-top scheme ripe for rip-offs: ACCC | The Australian

 A new Labor low:

A GOVERNMENT-BACKED website has warned consumers that a $308 million scheme to give pensioners free set-top boxes is “ripe for scams”. While Julia Gillard has defended her government’s policy to provide and install free set-top boxes for aged pensioners, people on a disability and war veterans, the SCAMwatch website — administered by the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission — has been telling householders that the scheme is likely to encourage rorts.

The website, set up to warn consumers about scams that have been brought to the government’s attention, warns of the risk of unauthorised “door-to-door salespeople” who falsely claim to represent the government and offer to sell equipment such as set-top boxes that allow people to access digital television channels after the switchover.

The SCAMwatch website states: “Scammers selling digital conversion equipment are targeting communities with the promise of a government reimbursement for any goods purchased.”
